About Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi National Park is a hidden gem of Tanzania, located in the northeastern part of the country near the Kenyan border.

The park was established in 1951 to protect the indigenous fauna and flora of the region, but it was not until recently that it became a popular tourist destination.

The park is home to over 90 species of mammals, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, and several types of antelopes.
One of the main attractions of the park is the black rhino, which has been successfully reintroduced to the area after being hunted to near extinction in the 20th century.
Visitors can also spot predators like cheetahs, leopards, and African wild dogs in the park.

The Tsavo-Mkomazi migration is a lesser-known but equally impressive wildlife migration that occurs between Tsavo West National Park in Kenya and Mkomazi National Park in Tanzania.
Unlike the more famous wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, the Tsavo-Mkomazi migration is characterized by the movement of zebras and other grazing animals between the two parks.

The migration is a result of seasonal rainfall patterns, and visitors can witness large herds of zebras, gazelles, and other animals moving across the savannah plains in search of water and fresh grazing grounds. It's a natural spectacle that is well worth experiencing for those interested in wildlife and the beauty of nature.

Mkomazi's landscape is diverse and striking, from the savannah plains to the rugged peaks of the Usambara and Pare mountain ranges. The park also boasts several large waterways, including the Umba River, which is home to over 200 bird species, making it a birdwatcher's paradise.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Mkomazi National Park in Tanzania is during the dry season, which runs from June to October.

During this time, the weather is mild, and the animals are easier to spot as they gather around the waterholes. It's also a great time for photography, as the clear skies provide excellent lighting.

However, the park is open year-round, and the rainy season from November to May can be a good time to visit for birdwatching.
